Due to changes in our society resulting in females becoming more career oriented and focussed in life and also having a better perspective in when and who to select as a life partner, the age of embracing motherhood is steadily increasing and so is the incidence of infertility among couples. Therefore the concept of “social oocyte Freezing” is gaining popularity rapidly.
Oocyte cryopreservation thus gives more freedom to women in making their life choices.
With increasing age in women there is a rapid decline in oocyte number and quality.Conception at age >35 years may result in fetal chromosomal anomalies and even fetal loss.Oocyte cryopreservation at a younger age alleviates the chances of chromosomal anomalies and a woman can have her own genetic child as compared to standard IVF with donor eggs at an older age.
The eggs are usually retrieved in the same process as in IVF. It is better to freeze a minimum of 8-12 M2 (mature) oocytes to enhance chances of conception.
If adequate number of eggs are not retrieved in the first cycle, then a second cycle is performed. When the patient desires a pregnancy ,these eggs are thawed and fertised with the partner’s sperm and embryos are then transferred back in the womb to achieve a pregnancy.
We are among the world’s first to start social freezing I 2007. We are also the first in India to state this procedure. Our centre has frozen eggs of many celebrities including film actresses, models, film producers and doctors as well. Our first social egg freezing patient Ex Miss World Diana Hayden had frozen her eggs in 2007 and subsequently had three babies 8-10 years later.Another celebrity patient of our’s is Ms Ekta Kapoor.
