In many cases of unexplained infertility or ovulation disorders incorrect timing of intercourse may be the reason for the couple’s inability to conceive.

In a women with regular ovulatory cycles day 14th or 15th is usually the day of ovulation counting the first day of period as day1.

Therefore in these cases where the couple’s investigations like semen analysis, ultrasound and hormonal tests (AMH,TSH,PRL) are normal,Timed Intercourse is explained to the couple and offered as a first line treatment for a few cycles.

In this a women is given mild ovulation induction drugs like clomiphene citrate or Letrozole from day 2 of cycle for 5 days. This is followed by serial ultrasound from day 9 of cycle. When the leading follicle becomes 18mm-20mm in size an injection of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) is given to rupture the follicle. The couple is then advised to maintain normal relation for next two to three days. With this procedure 20-30% success is achieved after usually three attempts .
